This module aids the transition to university by developing basic learning skills including reading and essay-writing as well as field observation and recording, through lectures and small-group tutorial work. In the Green London Project students explore urban environmental management in London, developing their social capital by working in small groups, becoming part of the community of geographers and environmental scientists at QMUL and learning how research, including ¿citizen science¿, can impact on organisations that are managing green spaces in London.

In this module Students will carry out an exhaustive search of the scientific and medical literature which is relevant to their research project using the resources of the University, including appropriate databases and specialist search engines, as well as paper-based resources in the University Library. This module will provide PBL-like tutorials and seminars with opportunities to critically-evaluate research papers. Some students may further develop this work to include a meta analysis of multiple papers.

Pre-requisites: any 2nd-year genetics module. In this module you will be introduced to strategies and methods for identifying the molecular genetic basis and biochemical consequences of inherited human disorders, especially those related to metabolic deficiencies. You will also learn approaches in population genetics, in particular how linkage disequilibrium (LD) is used to identify loci associated with human disease. You will learn to appreciate quantitative traits in humans and the use of regression and heritability estimates to infer the genetic basis of human disease and other important traits. These topics will be drawn together in the interpretation of molecular data to obtain evidence of the action of natural selection and for a better understanding of metabolic diseases.
